The Ugly Doll

In the 1940’s, a psychological test using Dolls was used to study the impact of racial prejudices that children develop about their own races, as well as perceptions of others.

I challenge you all today, regardless of your race, to show this picture to your child/ren and ask them which doll they believe is prettier? Be specific. Ask them their thoughts on hair texture and eye colour too. Ask them about nose shapes; do they prefer slimmer or wider noses? Ask them about the fabric choices of both dolls too. Do they associate African print with poverty or wealth? With the market woman or the Boss/CEO?

Now is the time to start an open, honest & safe dialogue with your children about their perception of self. Do not exclude the boys, more than anything, it is imperative to learn the thoughts and feelings on race of your young sons across all races. Understand their complexes, both superior & inferior, and decide if you think it’s necessary to intervene as a parent/guardian/relative.
